You want to know who the Hausfrau is? She’s a person who used to be a bookseller, used to be able to stay up past 11 p.m., used to go to shows. Now she’s usually in bed by 9.30, usually at home, and usually none too pleased with the state of things. She lives in a very nice neighborhood in a college town in Connecticut, which sounds very tony but it isn’t, really. Not for the Hausfrau. She’s just been here so long, she’s grandfathered in.
Can you tell me how to check if the cake is done? The last one I made seemed a bit wet inside.
Thanks

Sorry. Thought the comment was tied to the post that I read. I was referring to baking Colwin’s black cake.

Hi! It seems to me that I was also a little apprehensive on this point, because I actually expected the cake to seem rather “wet” as well. I think, though, that I just kept testing it with a toothpick until the toothpick came out pretty clean. It took a long time, though, to be sure. I think were I to do this again I would assume close to two hours baking time.
We’ve eaten the cake (I spent much of today delivering cakes as gifts in fact!) and they’ve gotten good reviews — so presumably if one really likes fruitcakes, this kind of enterprise is worthwhile. For me, though, I think I’m going to stick to Aunt Velma.

Where are you? Why did you stop writing? I just found you!!! You’re real! And you swear! Okay, I’ve probably said too much, but I could’ve used you several years ago. Thank you. You’ve still made my day today.

Lena, I have no idea how people find me. I guess I could pay attention to widgets and stuff to see, but I can’t be fucking bothered. I keep the blog up and am just sort of amused when people find it and comment. This blog was a labor of love I maintained in my hausfrau days. For the last several years I’ve been working a job (roughly speaking) that means I have less time to focus on even little silly essays like these. For what it’s worth, there is more writing by me that can be found at https://longspaghettinight.wordpress.com/ and at https://edithryegadfly.blogspot.com/2006/
and the very determined might be able to find stuff I published online when I wrote for the New Haven Review.
I’m glad you like what I wrote. It was mostly fun to write these things.
